The 2-Stage NID Selection Process
NID does not select students through memory-based theory examinations. Instead, it uses a practical two-stage evaluation process designed to assess how you observe, think, analyse, and solve design problems.
DAT Prelims (Written Exam)
The Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims is a pen-and-paper examination consisting primarily of subjective drawing, visual perspective, and creative thinking questions along with objective aptitude sections.
Note: Prelims serves as a screening round to shortlist candidates for DAT Mains.
DAT Mains (Studio Test & Interview)
Shortlisted candidates appear for a hands-on Studio Test that determines final admission ranks:
- Studio Test (60% weightage): Material handling, 3D model making using clay, wire, and paper under time pressure.
- Sensitivity Assessment (40% weightage): Observation, environmental awareness, and design communication.

NID B.Des Disciplines & Specialisations
NID offers 4-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) degrees across four major design domains, each leading to a distinct career path. Industrial & Product Design focuses on consumer products, furniture, medical equipment, and physical user experience — shaping the objects people use every day. Communication Design spans Graphic Design, Animation Film Design, Exhibition Design, and Film & Video Communication, training students to communicate ideas visually. What is the age limit for NID 2027 admission?

Can a student from Commerce or Arts background apply to NID?
Yes. NID does not require a Science background — candidates who have passed or are appearing in 10+2 from any stream (Science, Commerce, or Arts) are eligible to apply.
Is admission based only on the DAT score, or do Class 12 marks matter?
