NID is not a drawing competition. A student who draws beautifully but thinks generically will lose to a student who draws simply but solves problems creatively. This is the most important thing to understand before you begin preparation.
The 2-Stage NID Selection Process
NID does not select students through memory tests or theory exams. It uses a 2-stage practical evaluation designed to test how you think, observe and solve — not what you have memorised.
🚨 The Mistake 90% of Students Make
Most students treat Prelims and Mains as two separate phases — preparing for Prelims first, then worrying about Mains later. This is the single biggest reason capable students fail. Prepare for both stages simultaneously from Day 1.
For Parents
The Stage 2 Studio Test involves physical material handling — clay, wire, cardboard — under strict time pressure. This cannot be prepared for in the final week. Ask your child’s coaching centre whether their programme includes regular Mains practice. If the answer is no, that is a serious gap.

A student who draws a simple chair with a genuinely thoughtful design solution will always outscore a student who draws a photorealistic chair with no idea behind it. Focus your preparation on thinking — not rendering.
