Unlike standard board exams, UCEED does not test memorisation or textbook formulas. It evaluates your raw cognitive processing speed, spatial intelligence, and how you think under intense pressure. Drawing is a part of the exam, but it is NOT the core deciding factor for UCEED. Logic and perspective accuracy matter infinitely more than artistic shading.
UCEED Paper Structure Breakdown
Part A (Computer Based)
Contains exactly 57 questions divided into:
- NAT (Numerical)
- MSQ (Multiple Select)
- MCQ (Multiple Choice)
Completely logic-driven screening test.
Part B (Pen & Paper)

Crucial Rule: Do NOT use colors unless explicitly asked; stick to graphite/grayscale.
Part A is a strict qualifying filter. If you do not clear the minimum category-wise cutoff marks in Part A, your Part B (Drawing) paper will NOT be evaluated at all, regardless of how good your sketch is.
Common Misunderstandings About UCEED
Many talented students ruin their preparation because of incorrect assumptions. Clearing these early is essential before mapping out your preparation roadmap:
Part A (Objective) carries massive weightage. The best sketch won’t save your rank if you fail logical reasoning.
UCEED is unpredictable. Coaching gives direction, but raw analytical practice builds the actual mental muscle.
Reality: While Science helps with spatial logic, Commerce and Humanities students crack UCEED every year through sheer lateral thinking.
Colleges Through UCEED & Seat Realities
UCEED scores are primarily used for admission to the highly coveted B.Des programs at elite IITs and IIITDM. The Core Institutes include IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Roorkee, and IIITDM Jabalpur.
Seats are exceptionally limited. There are only around 245 total seats available across all participating IITs combined. The acceptance rate is often less than 2%.
While students from any stream can write UCEED, admission rules vary across the 7 participating campuses. 3 specific campuses (IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, and IIITDM Jabalpur) strictly require a Science background in your 12th standard. Out of these 3, IIITDM Jabalpur allows either PCM or PCB, while Guwahati and Roorkee strictly require PCM. If you are an Arts or Commerce student, you are fully eligible to crack UCEED, but your seat choices will be limited to the remaining 4 campuses (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, and IIT Indore).
Because IIT seats are so scarce, UCEED scores are also accepted by numerous top-tier private universities across India. You must have a safety net—such as exploring a Plan B private college strategy—and avoid relying completely on one exam.
Realistic Cutoffs & The Counselling Process
Qualifying UCEED is a two-step mathematical game. First, you must clear the Part A Qualifying Cutoff just to get your drawing checked. For General category students, this usually hovers around 70 to 85 marks out of 200, depending on the paper’s difficulty.
However, just qualifying does not guarantee a seat. Final admissions are based on your All India Rank (AIR). Here is the historical trend of closing ranks for Open Category students to give you a realistic target:

- Reserved categories (EWS, OBC, SC, ST) have significantly lower cutoff ranks, but the competition remains fiercely proportional.
- IIT Bombay remains the undisputed #1 choice. IIT Delhi and IIT Hyderabad follow closely due to their location and interdisciplinary approach. Even though IIT Guwahati is an older design department, IIT Indore and IIT Hyderabad’s closing ranks have recently started pushing ahead in student preference.
The B.Des Counselling Process
Once results are declared, getting a rank is not the end. You must manually apply for B.Des admission through the joint UCEED counselling portal (BDes Seat Allotment portal). There are usually 5 rounds of seat allotment. You will submit your campus preferences (keeping the PCM/PCB rules in mind), and seats are allocated strictly based on your UCEED rank, category, and preference order.
5. Strategic Alignment: Is UCEED Right for You?
Before you dive headfirst into preparation, figure out if this exam matches your cognitive style.
Consider UCEED if:
- You genuinely enjoy logical puzzles and visual problem-solving.
- You like thinking through unfamiliar, abstract situations.
- You remain calm under strict, time-bound pressure.
- You are interested in UX/UI or integrating tech with design.
Reconsider if:
- You prefer purely artistic or fashion-oriented design (Look into NID/NIFT).
- You rely heavily on standard academic memorisation.
- You are deeply uncomfortable with numerical logic or spatial reasoning.
A major difference between UCEED and exams like NIFT or NID is the degree structure. NIFT and NID often require you to lock into a specific discipline (e.g., B.Des in Fashion Design or Furniture Design). IITs, however, offer an Interdisciplinary B.Des Degree. You do not apply for a specific discipline. Instead, the curriculum allows you to explore multiple design domains—such as UI/UX, Product Design, Visual Communication, and Mobility Design—and you build your specific domain expertise through electives in your later semesters.
