How to Fill the NID, NIFT and UCEED Application Forms: A Step-by-Step Guide

Documents, photo and signature sizes, what to choose in each section, how to write NID’s three statement questions, the mistakes that cost students their applications, and a final checklist before you pay.

Get the Free Career Clarity Blueprint

Every year, students who have prepared well lose marks or even their candidature because of a careless mistake in the application form: a wrong category, a photo that gets rejected, or a statement copied from the internet. The form is the first thing the institute sees about you. In this guide, you will learn how to fill the NID application form, as well as the NIFT and UCEED forms. This guide walks you through each exam section by section, and explains why each rule matters, so you fill it correctly the first time.

Use this guide with the official handbook. Exact dates, fees and file sizes can change every year. The steps and rules below stay largely the same, but always confirm the current values in the official handbook or brochure before you submit.

Part 1 · For All Three Exams

Before You Start: Keep These Ready

  1. A personal email ID and mobile number that you will use for the next 8–10 months. Why: admit cards, results and counselling updates come only to these. A parent’s work email or a number that may change is risky.
  2. A recent colour photograph taken at a professional studio. Why: NID’s handbook clearly states that self-composed portraits are not accepted. A studio photo with a plain light background is the safest choice for every exam.
  3. Your signature on plain white paper, scanned or photographed and cropped neatly. Why: a signature on lined paper, or with shadows and edges visible, often gets rejected or looks unprofessional on your admit card.
  4. Class 10 certificate (for your name and date of birth exactly as recorded). Why: your name and date of birth must match your documents exactly. Even a small spelling difference can cause problems during verification.
  5. Category certificate (EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST or PwD), if applicable, in the current valid format. Why: a wrong or outdated certificate can lead to losing reserved-category benefits later, even after you clear the exam.

Tip: keep separate folders for each exam with files already resized to their required format and size. Use any free online image compressor to bring a file within the KB range, and check the final size before uploading.

Part 2 · NID DAT

How to Fill the NID Application Form (Step by Step)

NID’s application is filled online on the official NID admissions portal. Registration usually opens in September and closes in late November or early December. The DAT Prelims is common for the B.Des, the 5.5-year Integrated M.Des Pathway and the M.Des.

Step 1: Register and select the right application

The form gives you two options: “B.Des / Integrated M.Des” and “M.Des”. If you are in Class 12 or have just finished it, select B.Des / Integrated M.Des. The B.Des and the 5.5-year Integrated M.Des Pathway are a single combined option at this stage, so you do not choose between them in the form. Understand how the two routes differ in our guide to the NID Integrated Pathway vs B.Des, and check the current handbook for when that choice is made. Why: selecting M.Des by mistake puts you in the wrong admission process, and this may not be fixable after the edit window closes.

Step 2: Fill personal, academic and category details

  • Enter your name and date of birth exactly as on your Class 10 certificate.
  • Select your category only if you have a valid certificate for it.
  • Choose your DAT Prelims test city based on where you can travel easily on exam day.

Step 3: Upload photo, signature and certificates

DocumentFormatFile size (as per NID Handbook 2027–28)Key rule
PhotographJPG / JPEG50 KB – 200 KBRecent, coloured, taken at a professional studio. Self-composed portraits are not accepted.
SignatureJPG / JPEG50 KB – 200 KBScanned or digitally photographed, cropped to the required size.
Category / PwD certificateAs specified in the current handbookOnly if you are applying under that category.

Step 4: Answer the three statement questions

In recent years, the NID B.Des form has included three short written questions. They are your only chance to show the institute who you are in your own words. Treat them like a mini Statement of Purpose.

Up to 900 characters

Q1. Why have you chosen NID’s Bachelor of Design Programme?

What to write: what specifically attracts you to design, and what you know about how NID teaches, such as learning by doing and project-based studio work. Mention one real experience that made you choose design.

Avoid: “NID is the best design institute in India” or “I have loved drawing since childhood”. Why: every applicant writes this, so it tells the reader nothing about you.

Up to 1,200 characters

Q2. How do you think this course will help your academic plans and/or career ambition?

What to write: a realistic direction (for example, a design area you want to explore) and how the course builds the skills for it. It is fine to say you want to explore before choosing a specialisation, as long as you explain what you hope to discover.

Avoid: big claims you cannot explain, like “I will start my own global design brand”. Why: if you are shortlisted, panels may discuss what you wrote. Write only what you can talk about with confidence.

Up to 900 characters

Q3. Please write a brief statement about yourself including details of your interests, hobbies, etc.

What to write: two or three genuine interests, and what each one taught you or how you practise it. Specific details (“I repair old bicycles and redesign their seats for comfort”) are far stronger than lists (“reading, music, travelling”).

Avoid: listing ten hobbies. Why: depth shows curiosity and commitment, which design schools value more than variety.

How to write these well: draft all three answers in a document first, check the character count (spaces usually count as characters), read them aloud, then paste them into the form. Write in simple, clear English in your own voice. Never copy a sample answer from the internet. Why: copied statements sound generic and can be easily recognised, and your answers should match the person who later appears for the studio test and interview.

Step 5: Pay the fee and download your confirmation

Pay the application fee shown on the portal, then download and save the confirmation page and application PDF. Why: if anything goes wrong later, this is your proof of a completed application.

Step 6: Use the edit window wisely

NID usually opens a short edit window right after registration closes. Use it only to correct genuine mistakes. Why: some details may not be editable even in this window, and it is open for only a few days.

NID · Do’s and Don’ts

NID Form: What to Do and What to Avoid

Do

  • Fill the form early, not in the last week. Portals slow down near deadlines.
  • Read the full handbook once before you start. Most rejections come from rules students never read.
  • Keep your login details safe. You will need them for admit cards and results.

Don’t

  • Don’t upload a selfie or home photo. Self-composed portraits are not accepted.
  • Don’t choose a category without a valid certificate. It can cancel your admission later.
  • Don’t copy statement answers. They sound generic and may be discussed in the interview.
Part 3 · NIFT

How to Fill the NIFT Application Form

In recent cycles, NIFT’s entrance exam application has been filled online through the National Testing Agency (NTA) portal, with registration usually opening between November and January. Always start from the link on the official NIFT website so you land on the correct portal.

Step 1: Register and select your programme

Choose the undergraduate programme you are applying for (B.Des and/or B.FTech, as offered that year). Why: B.Des and B.FTech have different eligibility and different tests, so the wrong choice can make your application invalid.

Step 2: Fill personal, academic and category details

  • Enter details exactly as on your Class 10 certificate, including your parents’ names.
  • Keep a valid ID number ready (such as Aadhaar or another government ID).
  • Choose your test-centre cities in order of preference.

Step 3: Upload photo, signature and documents

DocumentFormatFile size (as per the NIFT 2026 Information Bulletin)Key rule
PhotographJPG10 KB – 200 KBRecent colour photo, white background, face covering about 80% of the image, full face without a mask, both ears visible.
SignatureJPGWithin 10 KB – 30 KBSignature in running hand. A signature in capital letters is not accepted.
PwD / UDID certificatePDF50 KB – 300 KBOnly if applicable.
Live photographCaptured through your webcam or phone camera while filling the formSit in good light, facing the camera, with no cap or mask.

Why these rules matter: NIFT has stated that applications with signatures in capital letters will not be accepted, and photos that do not meet the face and background rules can be rejected.

Step 4: Pay the fee and save your confirmation

Pay the fee shown on the portal and download the confirmation page. Use the correction window, if opened, only for genuine mistakes.

Do

  • Sign in running hand, the way you normally sign. Capital-letter signatures are rejected.
  • Use a plain white background for your photo. Coloured or busy backgrounds can be rejected.
  • Check that both ears are visible in the photo. It is a stated requirement.

Don’t

  • Don’t use a fake or third-party website. Start only from the official NIFT site.
  • Don’t share your login with agents. You are responsible for every detail submitted.
  • Don’t leave the form for the last day. Portals slow down near deadlines.

Part 4 · UCEED

How to Fill the UCEED Application Form

UCEED is conducted by IIT Bombay, and registration is done only through the official UCEED website. Registration usually opens on 1 October and closes at the end of October, with a short late-fee window after that.

Step 1: Check eligibility before you pay

UCEED allows a maximum of two attempts, in consecutive years, and only for students who take Class 12 for the first time in the current or previous year. Students from all streams can appear. Why: the registration fee is neither refundable nor transferable, so an ineligible registration is money lost.

Step 2: Choose three exam cities

You must choose three cities in order of preference. Why: once registration is complete, requests to change the city are not entertained.

Step 3: Upload your photo, signature and documents

DocumentFormatKey rule (as per the UCEED brochure)
PhotographJPG (.jpg)Recent colour photo taken within the last six months; full frontal face, head centred and covering 70–80% of the photo.
SignatureJPG (.jpg)Clear image of your full signature on white paper.
Proof of agePDFClass 10 certificate, passport or birth certificate.
Class 12 proofPDFPassed last year: your qualifying exam certificate. Appearing this year: a certificate from your Principal in the format given in the brochure.
Category / PwD certificatePDFIn the Central Government format given in the brochure appendices.
Name-change proofPDFA gazette notification, only if your name differs from your Class 12 certificate.

File size limits are shown on the registration portal. Keep each file within the stated limit before you upload.

Step 4: Pay the fee and download your confirmation

Pay the registration fee shown for your category and save the confirmation. Later, check your admit card carefully and report any mistakes within the correction window. Why: an incomplete registration form is rejected and treated as invalid.

Do

  • Get the Principal’s certificate early if you are in Class 12. Schools can take time to issue it.
  • Use the official format for category certificates. Other formats can be rejected.
  • Email the UCEED office if you have a genuine doubt. Guesswork can invalidate your form.

Don’t

  • Don’t pick cities casually. They cannot be changed later.
  • Don’t register if you have used both attempts. The fee is not refundable.
  • Don’t upload a photo older than six months. It does not meet the brochure’s rule.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I choose between NID’s B.Des and Integrated M.Des in the form?

No. In the application form, the B.Des and the Integrated M.Des Pathway appear as one combined option (“B.Des / Integrated M.Des”), separate from the M.Des option. Check the current handbook for how and when the choice between the two routes is made.

Is a mobile-clicked photo acceptable for the NID form?

NID’s handbook asks for a coloured photograph taken at a professional studio and states that self-composed portraits are not accepted. A studio photo is the safest option.

Do spaces count in NID’s character limits?

Online character counters usually include spaces. Draft your answers in a document, check the count with spaces, and keep a small buffer below the limit.
