NID Integrated Pathway (5.5-Year M.Des) 2027-28: Complete Admissions Guide
NID’s latest handbook (published 10 September 2026) confirms how DAT Mains works, plus dates, fees, seats, and eligibility for the 5.5-year Integrated M.Des — explained clearly, with everything NID hasn’t published yet flagged honestly.
If you’ve been researching NID admissions, you’ve probably only ever heard of the standard 4-year B.Des. There’s a second, less-talked-about route into NID: the 5.5-Year Professional Education Programme, Master of Design (Integrated Pathway) — one entrance application and a single admission cycle, leading directly to a Master of Design.
NID published a fresh Admissions Handbook — covering both the 5.5-year Integrated Pathway and the standard B.Des — on 10 September 2026. This guide walks through exactly what the Integrated Pathway is, how the 2027-28 admission process works, and — just as importantly — what NID has not confirmed yet, so you’re not planning around guesses.
How DAT Mains Works
The 2027-28 handbook confirms how DAT Mains works for the Integrated Pathway: it consists of two mandatory parts — a Studio Sensitivity Test and an In-Person Sensitivity Test. Only candidates who appear for both are eligible for the merit list, and shortlisting to Mains is fixed at 2.5× the available seats per category.
What Is the NID Integrated Pathway?
The Integrated Pathway is a single 5.5-year, 11-semester programme that takes you straight from 10+2 to a Master of Design — no separate Bachelor’s-then-Master’s application later. It’s currently offered at NID Ahmedabad and its extension campuses, NID Gandhinagar and NID Bengaluru, across 15 design disciplines grouped into 5 streams (full table below). For a full walkthrough of NID’s exam and admission process, see our NID Entrance Exam Guide.
One rule worth knowing before you apply: if you apply for the B.Des/Integrated Pathway route, you cannot also apply for NID’s Independent 2.5-Year Specialised M.Des programmes — both entrance exams are scheduled on the same day, so it’s one or the other.
Common Misreading
“135 seats across 15 disciplines” sounds like it’s NID’s total intake — so people assume this is roughly the same size as the regular B.Des programme.
What The Handbook Actually Says
135 is 9 seats × 15 disciplines, specific to the Integrated Pathway at Ahmedabad/Gandhinagar/Bengaluru only. It is not NID’s overall B.Des intake, and it doesn’t include NID AP, Assam, Haryana, or MP — the 2027-28 handbook states that details of the programmes offered at those institutes will be made available on the respective institute websites.
The 15 Disciplines and Seats (2027-28)
Each discipline carries a fixed intake of 9 seats. Here’s the full breakdown by stream and campus:

Plus 15 supernumerary Overseas seats (one per discipline) at NID Ahmedabad only — outside this count, reserved for foreign nationals.
How the Admission Process Works
Apply & sit for DAT Prelims
One application covers both stages. DAT Prelims is a paper-and-pencil test, common across all NIDs, on Sunday, 20 December 2026. On the form, B.Des and the Integrated Pathway are one combined choice (“B.Des / Integrated M.Des”) — see our application form guide.
Get shortlisted for DAT Mains
Prelims score is used only for shortlisting — it carries no weightage into Mains. Shortlisting is 2.5× the available seats per category.
Clear both parts of DAT Mains
Studio Sensitivity Test + In-Person Sensitivity Test. Both are mandatory — skipping either one makes you ineligible for the merit list, regardless of your Prelims rank. Prepare with our DAT Mains & Studio Sensitivity Test guide.
Category-wise merit list
Separate lists for Open, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, PwD, and Overseas. A rank on the list does not guarantee a seat.
Second application + seat allotment
After Mains results, eligible candidates submit a separate application for seat allotment, then complete counselling, document verification, and fee payment. Seat allotment may be conducted online or offline, at NID’s discretion.

Answer sheets can be requested after the admissions process is complete, subject to the handbook’s stated procedure and a ₹1,000-per-exam fee.
Are You Eligible? Quick Checklist
- Born on/after 1 July 2006 (General/GEN-EWS) — or 1 July 2003 (OBC-NCL/SC/ST) — or 1 July 2001 (PwD)
- Passed, or appearing for, your 10+2 (any stream — Science, Arts, Commerce, Humanities) in the 2026-27 academic year
- From a recognised board — CBSE, IB, ICSE, or an equivalent listed in the handbook (state boards, NIOS, GCE A-Level, AICTE diploma, etc.)
- Cleared Class XII in your first attempt — a backlog, compartment, or supplementary result makes the candidate ineligible for admission
- Able to submit your qualifying marksheet by 15 July 2027 if your board result is still pending
Reservation of Seats
Seats follow standard Government of India reservation norms. For a 9-seat discipline, the split works out to:
| Category | Reservation % | Seats (of 9) |
|---|---|---|
| GEN-EWS | 10% | 1 |
| OBC-NCL | 27% | 2 |
| SC | 15% | 1 |
| ST | 7.5% | 1 |
PwD candidates get 5% horizontal reservation across all categories (Open, GEN-EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST combined) rather than a separate vertical block. Unfilled OBC-NCL seats are de-reserved to Open category; unfilled GEN-EWS, SC, ST, and Overseas seats are not de-reserved to other categories.
NID’s Multi-Campus Network
Beyond Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Bengaluru, NID also has four more Institutes of National Importance: NID Andhra Pradesh (est. 2015), NID Haryana (est. 2016), NID Madhya Pradesh (est. 2019-20), and NID Assam (est. 2019, all four have historically offered a 4-year B.Des in Industrial, Communication and Textile & Apparel Design; their 2027-28 offerings will be published on their own websites). Eligibility, age limits, and exam rules are common across all of them — but as the notice below explains, what each one actually offers for 2027-28 isn’t fully published yet.
What NID Hasn’t Confirmed Yet
In the interest of not guessing on your behalf, here’s exactly what this handbook leaves open as of 10 September 2026:
How the 5.5 years are structured: the handbook does not provide a detailed breakdown of the programme beyond stating that it consists of 11 semesters across 15 disciplines and five streams. Additional programme details will be announced in due course — don’t plan your subject expectations around any third-party claim in the meantime.
NID AP / Assam / Haryana / MP course offerings: eligibility and exam rules are common across all NIDs, but for these four institutes the 2027-28 handbook states that details of the programmes offered will be made available on the respective institute websites — not in this handbook.
We’ll update this guide the moment NID publishes either of these.
Should You Choose the Integrated Pathway?
It’s a good fit if:
You’re confident design is your career, not just your undergrad — the Integrated Pathway commits you to 5.5 years and a Master’s outcome from day one, with no re-entry exam between a Bachelor’s and Master’s. It also suits students who want to avoid applying twice (once for B.Des, again for M.Des) and are comfortable committing to an integrated 5.5-year pathway this early.
Think twice if:
You’re still unsure which discipline fits you, or you’d rather test the waters with a 4-year B.Des and decide on a Master’s later based on real studio experience. Since the detailed programme structure beyond “11 semesters, 15 disciplines” isn’t public yet, you’re also committing to a structure NID hasn’t fully explained.
