What is NID?
The National Institute of Design (NID) is an Institute of National Importance and one of India’s most respected design institutions. Rather than teaching students to draw beautifully, NID develops the ability to observe people, understand real problems, think critically, and create practical design solutions.
Its admission process evaluates creativity, observation, visual communication, problem-solving, and design thinking—qualities essential for becoming a professional designer across multiple industries.

NID operates across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Bengaluru, Andhra Pradesh (Amaravati), Haryana (Kurukshetra), Madhya Pradesh (Bhopal), and Assam (Jorhat). The B.Des is offered at NID Ahmedabad and the four newer NIDs (Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Assam), while the Gandhinagar and Bengaluru campuses offer M.Des programmes only.

The 2-Stage NID Selection Process
NID does not select students through memory-based theory examinations. Instead, it uses a practical two-stage evaluation process designed to assess how you observe, think, analyse, and solve design problems.
DAT Prelims (Written Exam)
STAGE 1
The Design Aptitude Test (DAT) Prelims is a pen-and-paper examination built around drawing, visualisation and creative-thinking questions. The most recent (2026) paper was entirely subjective, while earlier papers also included an objective aptitude section, so it is sensible to prepare for both.
Note: Prelims is a screening round only. Its score carries 0% weightage in the final merit list; it simply decides who is shortlisted for DAT Mains.
DAT Mains (Studio & In-Person Sensitivity Tests)
STAGE 2
Shortlisted candidates appear for a hands-on Studio Test that determines final admission ranks:
- Studio Sensitivity Test (60% of final merit): Material handling, 3D model making using clay, wire, and paper under time pressure.
- In-Person Sensitivity Test (40% of final merit): An in-person assessment of your observation, design thinking and how clearly you communicate ideas.
The Most Common Preparation Mistake
Most aspirants prepare only for DAT Prelims and postpone Mains preparation until after the results are declared. This creates a severe disadvantage because Studio Test skills—like material handling and 3D spatial execution—require months of consistent practice. The strongest candidates prepare for both stages simultaneously from Day 1.

What NID Evaluators Actually Look For
NID evaluators are not searching for finished artists. They look for students who demonstrate curiosity, strong observational awareness, and structured problem-solving skills.
Empathy & Observation
Your ability to notice genuine friction points in everyday life, understand how people interact with products or spaces, and propose human-centered improvements.
Spatial & Perspective Logic
The ability to visualise three-dimensional forms, understand proportion, light, and perspective, and communicate ideas accurately through clean sketches.

NID B.Des Disciplines & Specialisations
NID Ahmedabad offers the 4-year Bachelor of Design (B.Des) in eight disciplines: Animation Film Design, Ceramic & Glass Design, Exhibition Design, Film & Video Communication, Furniture & Interior Design, Graphic Design, Product Design and Textile Design. The four newer NIDs offer the B.Des in Communication Design, Industrial Design and Textile & Apparel Design. Specialisations such as Interaction Design are taught at the master’s level. New for 2027–28, NID also offers a 5.5-year Integrated M.Des Pathway that students enter directly after Class 12.

Structured 3-Phase NID Preparation Roadmap
Phase 1
Foundation & Observation (Months 1–3)
Master perspective drawing, light & shade, human anatomy proportion, and daily sketching from observation. Build basic awareness of design history and current creative trends.
Phase 2
DAT Prelims Mastery (Months 4–6)

What is the age limit for NID 2027 admission?

Can a student from Commerce or Arts background apply to NID?
Yes. NID does not require a Science background — candidates who have passed or are appearing in 10+2 from any stream (Science, Commerce, or Arts) are eligible to apply.
Is admission based only on the DAT score, or do Class 12 marks matter?
NID admission is primarily based on performance in DAT Prelims and DAT Mains (Studio Test + Sensitivity Assessment), not on Class 12 board marks. Board marks mainly matter for meeting the basic 10+2 pass eligibility requirement.
What’s the difference between NID and NIFT?

Is coaching mandatory to crack NID?
No. Coaching can help with structured practice and feedback, but it isn’t mandatory. Many students clear NID through disciplined self-study, consistent sketching practice, and solving past papers. What matters most is consistent, focused preparation — not the source of guidance.
What if I don’t clear DAT Prelims — are there backup options?

Which is tougher — DAT Prelims or DAT Mains?
