About This Book
What English Communication Means for Design Exams
Design exams test whether you can read precisely and express yourself clearly. The English questions reward rules you can learn — grammar, vocabulary and careful reading — rather than a vague feel for the language. NIFT’s General Ability Test includes a Communication and English Comprehension section, and UCEED and CEED test language in Part A. NID has included English questions in past papers, though its most recent Prelims did not have a GAT section.

One Example, One Question for You
Both questions are taken from Chapter 1 (Spotting Errors). Study the example, then try the next one.
Identify the part with an error:
“The quality of the mangoes sold in this market (A) / are (B) / far better (C) / than those available in the city. (D)”
Solution: The subject is the singular noun “quality”; “of the mangoes” is only a modifier. So “are” should be “is”.
Tip: Strip away the phrase between subject and verb, then check agreement.
Identify the part with an error:
“By the time the fire brigade arrived, (A) / the entire building (B) / has already (C) / burnt down completely. (D)”
🎉 Correct! Your grammar instincts are strong.
An action completed before another past action needs the past perfect: “had already burnt down”. This book has 800 questions like this.
Get the Full BookNot quite. Here’s the trick.
“By the time … arrived” puts us in the past, so the earlier action needs the past perfect: “had already”, not “has already”. Part C is wrong. Chapter 1 trains this with 20 worked examples.
