NIFT Counselling 2027:
The Complete Campus & Course Preference Strategy Guide
The biggest reality students must understand is that counselling often matters more than the exam itself. Every year, thousands of students clear NIFT. But very few actually make the right decision after that. Wrong campus preferences, emotional choice filling, and misunderstanding disciplines can directly affect your internships, exposure, and placements for the next four years.
The Biggest Mistake Students Make
Most students fill their NIFT preference list based purely on city popularity: Delhi First, Mumbai Second, Bengaluru Third. They do this without even thinking about specific department strengths.
⚠️ Why This Is Dangerous
NIFT is not a single college; it is a massive network of 20 campuses. If you blindly choose “Delhi” but end up in a course you aren’t passionate about, you risk 4 years of academic frustration. Don’t chase the city. Chase the right direction.
How NIFT Counselling Actually Works
NIFT counselling is a system-based allocation process. The system does NOT optimize for what you like; it simply follows your order blindly from top to bottom. Once a seat is allocated, you choose one of these paths:
❄️ Freeze
Accept the seat completely and exit further rounds.
🌊 Float
Keep current seat but remain eligible for a better option in the next round (Safest choice).
🛝 Slide
Stay in the allotted campus, but look for a better course within that specific location.
The Real NIFT Campus Hierarchy
NIFT does not officially rank its campuses. However, decades of industry networking and alumni strength have created a clear hierarchy.

Disciplines, Portfolios & Salary Realities
Not all courses yield the same starting salaries. However, your career is built by your portfolio, not just your degree label.
Fashion Communication (FC): Focuses on branding, graphic design, and UI/UX.
Placement Reality: Highest digital package potential. Starting salaries range from ₹4.5L to ₹7L, with top UI/UX portfolios crossing ₹12L – ₹15L PA.
Fashion Design (FD): Core focus on garment construction and styling.
Placement Reality: Highly competitive. Packages usually range from ₹3.5L to ₹7L, with exceptional portfolios reaching ₹12L PA.
Accessory Design (AD): Product design, UI/UX, and lifestyle goods.

Textile Design (TD): Deep dive into material innovation and sustainable fabrics.
Placement Reality: Stable export demand averaging ₹3L to ₹4.5L PA.
Knitwear Design (KD): Technical garment understanding and sportswear.

Leather Design (LD): Footwear and material processing.

Fashion Interior (FI): Only available in Nava Raipur and Varanasi. Focuses on retail spaces and experience systems.
Placement Reality: Fashion Interior is a newer specialization at NIFT with limited campus history — verified placement/salary data is not yet publicly available. We’ll update this section once reliable figures are published.
B.F.Tech (Apparel Production): Industrial engineering and manufacturing.
Placement Reality: Highly stable, technical roles with averages of ₹5L to ₹6L, pushing up to ₹12L – ₹30L at top campuses.
The Ultimate Insider Secret: Majors vs. Minors
What happens if you don’t get your desired course during counselling? Do not panic. NIFT curriculums consist of 80% Major subjects and 20% Minor (Inter-Disciplinary) subjects.
🎓 Mentor Note: The Ultimate Hack
The entire First Year is a common “Foundation Year.” From the Second Year onward, NIFT allows you to pick any discipline as your Minor. If you wanted Fashion Communication but got Textile Design as your Major, you can select Communication as your Minor. You can build your entire placement portfolio around your Minor subject and successfully get placed in that industry! You are never strictly boxed into just one field.
Centralized Placements & The Drop Year Dilemma
Many students believe taking a drop year for a Tier 1 campus is mandatory for good placements. This is a massive myth. Placements at NIFT are centralized. Companies have access to students from all 20 campuses simultaneously.
⚠️ The Bitter Truth
Recruiters hire your portfolio, not your campus. A student from a Tier 1 campus with a basic, uninspired portfolio might struggle to get a ₹25,000/month job. Meanwhile, a student from an Emerging Tier 3 campus with a stunning, highly technical portfolio can easily bag a ₹12 LPA package. Never skip a seat just because of the campus name. Enter the system and outwork the competition.
